      Okay, this is DEFINITELY double voiced. Madame L is saying that Edna is improved in the city, looks better, and doesn't even look like the same person she is so improved. She also is saying that the attraction Edna has to Robert is making her look better, and she is (unknowingly) saying that Edna's continuing progress towards finalizing herself - or at least controlling her own finalization - is showing in her physical appearance.

    an opportunity of reaching the city and making his vessel in time.

    postscript saying that if Mrs. Pontellier desired to finish the book
    which he had been reading to her, his mother would find it in his
    room, among other books there on the table. Edna experienced a pang of
    jealousy because he had written to his mother rather than to her.

    Abstract (Summary)

    This project discusses how Hannah More, a Romantic writer, brought about social and cultural changes in her patriarchal society by means of her paradoxical strategy of writing. Several critics are of the opinion that More is devoted to submission to traditional values but at the same time engaged in active social reform. Using Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of heteroglossia, the multiplicity of social voices within the context of a novel, this essay investigates Hannah More's discourses on submission to the patriarchy and liberation of the disadvantaged members of her society, such as women and the poor laboring men, from the political ideology of the ruling fathers in More's Strictures on the Modern System of Female Education and Village Politics .
