As a way of helping states and districts interested in laptop initiatives, NEIRTEC has reviewed published lessons learned from many laptop initiatives around the country and has prepared this paper, Lessons Learned About Providing Laptops for All Students. A Web discussion board has been set up to help promote discussion about these or other lessons learned.

Free Technology for Teachers: 10 Things Teachers Should Know Before 1:1 - 2 views

  • Tod Baker

I was on a conference call this evening with some other educators and administrators in the state of Maine. The purpose of the call was to brainstorm ideas for a video about preparing for teaching in a 1:1 computing environment. In advance of the call we were asked to generate a list of things that teachers should know before teaching in a 1:1 environment.

To watch the video, you'll first need to install the flash player.

This may be the device that makes 1:1 a reality for many. I want one of these today!

Maine: A MacBook for each student in grades 7-12 | Apple - CNET News - 1 views

  • Maine Education Commissioner Sue Gendron said the state has seen benefits in using the Apple notebooks in the middle schools; it wants to see those same benefits for high-school students.

"We have seen incredible success, with our middle schools showing increased student engagement and achievement with (Maine Learning Technology Initiative) in place, and we want to bring this same opportunity to our high schools," Gendron said in a statement. "This is not just about technology--it's about using the technology to support education."

Thoughts on Macs and Netbooks » Moving at the Speed of Creativity - 1 views

  • For student laptop initiatives, no one is using the Macbook Air– the $1000 white Macbook is the choice for many. That’s still $700 more at retail price.
    • Tod Baker

I can't ignore this difference. That cheap price demands attention.
  • Given the choice AND the funding, would you recommend the purchase of Mac laptops or netbooks (of some flavor) for your own school district?
    • Tod Baker

If I wanted the creativity suite of software that iLife provides, I would go with a Mac. But if I could get by with something like Google Apps and rely on cloud computing, then I would recommend a netbook.
  • Given the choice AND the funding, would you recommend the purchase of Mac laptops or netbooks (of some flavor) for your own school district? Would it surprise you to learn that at least 18 Maine school districts are now going with netbooks? Hat tip to Maine educator Alice Barr for telling me about this at NECC.

The hardware computing landscape is changing in big ways, and netbooks are a major catalyst along with mobile devices.

  • About Reinventing Project-Based Learning

This group illustrates what project-based learning can look like, especially when digital tools help students break free from the confines of teacher-driven and classroom-bound instruction.

Group administrator Jane Krauss and colleague Suzie Boss have just coauthored a book "Reinventing Project-Based Learning: Your Field Guide to Real-World Projects in the Digital Age". In writing the book we visited with teachers from around the world who are transforming the learning experience through meaningful and rigorous projects. We hope you will submit photos that capture the spirit of project-based learning. Please read the group rules for details.

    Please join us!

Scott Schwister of Higher Edison was nice enough to inform me that the 1001 Flat World Tales (book release late July) was mentioned in this NECC workshop as an "example of global collaboration."  Way out here in Korea, that's nice to learn.  They don't call Korea "the Hermit Kingdom" for nothing.

"Today, when students take the [SAT], they can take a programmable
calculator into the test with them-and that's a bridge to a day when
that device contains access to all the world's present information," he
said. "The question is, what are we testing when we enable people to
come in with the cloud of human knowledge behind them?"

    It
is inevitable that students will bring those tools with them to future
tests, he said, and when they do, "we will have changed the nature of
what we test to something a lot more like our ability to find, build,
and use complex information tools in real time."
