For many hikers, a "bucket list" or "life list" just wouldn't be complete unless it included a rim to rim hike across the Grand Canyon. I was fortunate enough to do just that over the Memorial Day weekend in 1996 with three fellow hikers.

Hike to Mt. Rogers in Virginia - 0 views

Nearly the entire length of the four-mile (one-way) hike to the summit of Mt. Rogers passes through open country, offering sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness as far as the eye can see. With the rocky outcroppings and the open views, it seems more like hiking in some places out west rather than in the Appalachian Mountains.

Admitting defeat and knowing when to say enough is enough is a vital life saving skill for any adventurer who is pushing the boundaries of what the human body is capable. This doesn't make it any easier to implement nor any easier to deal with the waiting media and sponsors on homecoming. Chris Bray and Clark Carter are two young Australian adventurers who had to face just such a situation in 2005. Their true strength and character was demonstrated when in 2008 they went back again to get the job done. Well done lads !

Each time a helicopter was mobilized for a potential rescue.\n\nOn the third mobilization, rescuers finally took the four hikers off the trail and cited the leader for "creating a hazardous condition" for the rescue teams.
