annotations highlight bug 958359 959095 959848 959920 960067 960888 priority

Hello, I have a rather pressing problem with annotations that aren't actually missing but just not showing on the page.

I just finished annotating an online draft of a student paper with Diigo and meant to send it back to the student when I realized that only 100 of the over 200 highlights and sticky notes I'd added were actually showing on the page. In the page's entry on my bookmarks list, "All annotations" says there are indeed 216 annotations in total, and I can click through to get a list of those 216, but without the actual page there, many of those annotations will make no sense at all to the student. From the pattern of missing annotations on the actual page, it seems like only the most recent 100 annotations are showing. Is there a way to get them all to show, please? Is 100 the limit of the number of annotations that will show on any given page?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give, I really, really don't want to start re-adding over 200 comments to that paper in some other program...

    Sincerely,

    Nele

Hi Graham, that probably isn't what's happening with my annotations -one or two might be highlights of identical texts, but certainly not the 100+ that aren't showing. The pattern of the 'disappearances' seems to suggest that older annotations become invisible when I add new ones (tried this out) so that only the most recent 100 are showing.

    Here's the page:
    http://www.diigo.com/063wi

Have I hit upon some kind of annotations limit here? I can't seem to find any information about that in the help pages. Is there a way to make everything show up? (They're all private highlights and annotations, in case that helps)

    Thanks for your help,

    Nele

    Hi Graham,

    >around five highlights are somehow blank/empty.

The blank highlights on the about page are sticky notes not anchored to a particular piece of text. (These sticky notes seem to be showing up normally at the top of the page, but I added them last.) It looks as if the about page is inclusive; about the first half of all highlights listed there don't show up on the page itself, the second half does. The entire page should look about the same as the last half of it, with annotated highlights at least every few lines.

I'm working with Firefox 3.0.10 on Vista and get the same result with the latest versions of the Diigo toolbar and Diigolet, and on IE as well. In My Bookmarks, the "All annotations" says 218 while the right-hand orange expandable number of annotations is 100. When I try to add new annotations, the "All annotations" number goes up while the right-hand number remains fixed on 100. The info shown in My Bookmarks coincides with what I see on the page, so this doesn't seem to be a browser issue.

    > At any time, has a new highlight overlapped with an older one?

    I don't believe so.

I really do get the impression that only my last 100 annotations can show up on the page. Could anyone from Diigo please tell me if there is some kind of existing limit for annotations that isn't described in the help pages? It's just that that student's deadline is next week and she needs the commentary on her paper now, so I'm rather pressed for time and I need to know if this is a solveable technical problem or something I won't be able to help no matter what. In the latter case, I should redo the commenting with some other program right away, otherwise my student will really be in trouble.

    Thanks again,

    Nele

Hi Graham, apologies for the late reply. 'Extract annotations' only gave me the annotations that were visible on the page, too. I looked for another solution since there wasn't much time to solve this now, but I'd really like to be able to annotate papers using Diigo in the future, so I hope this gets resolved.

    >To check that it's not a problem with the selected text, I highlighted those words myself and you should see those two at http://www.diigo.com/06507

I don't see any annotations on this page?

    >002.pdf is a screen shot of your http://www.diigo.com/063wi viewed anonymously in my browser

Yes, this is what I see, logged in or not. All highlights and annotations in the first half of the page are invisible, save for a handful that I added later on. The first highlights and annotations are gone.

    >48 public annotations of the page

All annotations I made on this page, highlights and sticky notes, are private, including the ones shown in 004.pdf. http://www.diigo.com/063wi was obtained using Send -> Get Annotated Link so I could demonstrate the problem, but all annotations there are still private. That link worked fine last week but doesn't show any annotations anymore, though. Why is that? (very confused now)

    Thanks again,

    Nele

Ah yes, they show up now.

    Hi Maggie,

Nope, still seeing only the latter half of the annotations on that page. Is there some kind of display limit that only allows 100 annotations to visibly appear on a page? Or only 100 annotations from one singe user, perhaps?

    Thank you for your help,

    Nele

FYI, the page with the missing annotations that I started this thread with in June is still showing only half of the annotations that are there -no change in the situation there. I agree wholeheartedly about the data loss. It's frustrating at the very least.

It would be very reassuring if someone from Diigo could actually confirm or deny whether there is some kind of limit on the number of annotations one can make on a page. Just like with the disappearance of full-text search in groups, I've repeatedly asked questions about this issue on the forum and in mail, but there's been no "official" answer. I absolutely want to continue using Diigo in a professional setting and find the new V4 a vast, vast improvement over the previous version, but it's not terribly confidence-inspiring when repeated queries about seemingly significant problems get no reaction at all.

Where did full-text search of groups go? - 22 views

Hello all, I can't seem to figure out how to do a full-text search of group items anymore. The "search in this group" box on the upper right searches tags, url, title, and annotations, but not full-text as it used to. Is there another way to full-text search of group items, or is the feature temporarily disabled for some reason?

    Cheers,

    Nele

    Hello Graham,

I've checked a few snapshots pages for unfound bookmarks, and they seem perfectly in order. The snapshots show up and there are no messages suggesting an error anywhere.

I really get the impression that the full-text search in groups just isn't there. In fact, I just recalled that I mentioned the apparent disappearance of this feature a couple of months ago while the new Diigo was still in testing phase, either in mail or on the forum, but I never got a reply from anyone from Diigo. But since no announcement was ever made of full-text group search being shelved, I assume this feature is either temporarily disabled or this is a bug.

    Thanks for the help,

    Nele

Ah, http://groups.diigo.com/group/Diigo_HQ/content/957149 was a bit different. I was working with the old Diigo in that instance, and it seemed to be a temporary glitch.

In the new version of Diigo, the group bookmarks full-text search has never worked for me. On August 4, I mentioned in an e-mail to Maggie that I couldn't see the group bookmarks full-text search box in V4. I got no reply, but the search box did reappear when V4 went live, so I assumed the feature was back. However, so far I've never known it to search full-text, but only title, tags, url, and annotations.

I've been trying with bookmarks from this group, and so far not found a single one by searching for a word appearing in the cached versions of the items:
    http://groups.diigo.com/group/lets_manga

Indeed, I'm talking about cached copies of group bookmarked pages (though full-text search should include topics as well really...)

Bookmark export getting only a small number of bookmarks - 26 views

bug export bookmarks groups review 20090930

I just noticed this, but apparently bookmark export has been exporting only a fraction of my bookmarks for a couple of months now. The zip containing the exported CSV file was 523kb in June, but only 16kb in August. It's 38kb now. The CSV file seems to contain only the most recent 402 bookmarks now.

    Screenshot of the exports:
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/419119/various/export.jpg

I tried exporting in Delicious format, resulting in a similar incomplete file. Anyone else ever had this problem?

(Any news on the group bookmark export feature mentioned here, btw?)

Yes, I've always had consistently larger files as well, this is the first time in two years this happens. I've tried deleting the last item in the export and the first missing item, but that made no difference. There are still exactly 400 bookmarks in the export (not 402 as I mentioned before).
  • Nele Noppe

That highlight is indeed not what it's supposed to be. I'll leave it there for now, but will delete it in a day or two and see if that helps.
  • Nele Noppe

Right, I deleted the bookmark with the strange highlight and tried exporting again. This time the export file contains 500 instead of 400 items. Strange. I'll check if I have any other botched highlights/annotations somewhere.
  • Nele Noppe

Follow-up: I tried exporting bookmarks several times the last few days, still with the same results as on October 1st: the export file containts only 500 items.

Is anyone from Diigo looking into this, by any chance?

Sorry, I should've added the link to my post. I got your message, visited the group homepage again, and saw all the bookmarks listed as usual, plus a message asking me to moderate for new members (you). I clicked on that message and approved you, but I don't know why I had to do that, since the group is set so that anyone can join freely.

When I went back to the group's main page, it was empty of bookmarks again, and it still is right at this moment. I'm afraid I don't follow right now...

    Thanks for helping,

Group bookmarks invisible? - 10 views

bug groups bookmarks resolved duplicate

We're using our groups in a classroom setting and this is extremely inconvenient (and alarming). When I go to the "My Groups" page, everything looks normal, but when I actually go to the groups, some have no bookmarks visible and the item count at the right of the page is 0. Clicking on the tags at the bottom right does give the list of bookmarks with the tag clicked, so the bookmarks are actually there. All the groups I own have this problem, and at least one of the groups that I'm a member of but do not own. Is this something in the group settings? I never changed any settings and can't for the life of me figure out what setting might cause my bookmarks not to be listed on the main group page.

One example where I see an empty group, whether logged in or not:
    http://groups.diigo.com/group/lets_manga

    Please help,

    Nele

(By the way, I had to re-join the Diigo Community group for some reason as well.)

One user's group bookmarks not visible in group rss feed - 10 views

Hello, having a strange problem with the group bookmarks rss feed of this group:
    http://groups.diigo.com/groups/japanesestudiesleuven

Items added by me show up in the group rss feed, but items added by user hc (the group owner) are nowhere to be seen in the feed. Is this related to group or personal settings? We've been comparing our settings, but haven't found any differences that seem even remotely related to the group rss feed. Thank you in advance for any tips/help.

Strange, we didn't see that one in the list yesterday (and we were looking for that exact item). And other items he entered are still invisible. I'll ask him to post another couple of things to see if it was some kind of temporary glitch.

How is the number of visits to a Diigo group calculated? - 8 views

groups visits
  • Nele Noppe

A question about the 'visits' counter on a Diigo group's homepage. How exactly is the number of visits to a group calculated? Is this only the number of people who visit the group's homepage, or are people who end up on the group bookmarks page directly and bypass the homepage (e.g. by clicking on a group tag cloud displayed on an external website) counted as well? Does this number only include unique visitors, or is each visit from the same IP address counted separately? Does the number include only logged-in Diigo users or also external visitors?

Etc, etc. I'd be very grateful if anyone could clarify exactly where the number of visits comes from.

    Sincerely,

Integrate Zotero-like features into Diigo - 246 views

    > Having citation / zotero support will benefit some of our users, but it will also then become unnecessarily "too complicated" for other users. Best workaround is to have a separate pro account to support such needs. We need to assess how great the demand for such pro account to proceed.

In my case, a pro account (without ads) that has added citation support would be absolutely perfect. My colleagues and I decided on Diigo to build an academic knowledge base after considering pretty much every other service out there (including CiteULike and Zotero), because we wanted our stuff to be available, useful, and thoroughly searchable for anyone, and Diigo seemed best equipped for that. We felt that trumped the lack of citation management features. Getting the social features AND citations would be academic heaven on earth, nothing less.

But I also agree that Diigo already has a lot of features and the interface has become quite cluttered (certainly with the ads), so it's probably a good idea to let users opt out of the features they don't use with pro accounts or advanced options, as Francisco suggested. A cluttered interface is not very nice to look at and runs the risk of confusing new people, such as the non-Diigo users we direct towards our knowledge base. We've found ourselves making long blog posts to explain to those people how to best search the Diigo interface of our group, and they're still quite confused quite often.

    > Also, what are some recommendations / good ways to reach out to librarians, scholars, etc. == > people who will really appreciate these features...

Adding citation management and then letting word of mouth do its job sounds best to me :) I would certainly make some additional noise about Diigo to colleagues/students/fellow bloggers/whoever I can corner if citation management became available.

That would be fantastic. It's about the only thing that Diigo still lacks, for me. We've been recommending Furl and similar bookmarking services to our students for years, with the citation features being a big plus. Using several bookmarking and citation services (Furl, LibraryThing, Zotero, Diigo etc) because they all have one feature that we really need but that the others lack is a huge hassle. We could switch to Diigo only if it can do academic citations. Keep up the good work!

Me too! I'm using Diigo in an academic setting, and the ads really don't fit in with that. I'm looking forward to the speedy introduction of pro accounts.
