AFAICT in Diigo 4.0 beta, handling of
    #
character within URLs improves the ability of Diigo to bookmark some types of page. At least:

    * compatible with Google Gmail
    * partly compatible with Google Wave.

Please, did that script lead to anything?

(I posted An omnipresent Diigolet, or something like it in December 2008, then stumbled across this 2007 topic whilst answering Diigolet toolbar won't stay put.)

    I imagine performance implications, but I thought I'd ask…

Thanks to Jean-Lou Dupont† I had an opportunity to experiment with an extension to the developer channel version of Chrome, presenting Diigolet 3.15b23 always, in all windows and tabs.

The extension seems to work perfectly :) but version 3.15b23 of Diigolet is not perfectly suited to an always-on approach.

http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/Documents/diigo-public/299 offers ten screen shots (maybe more to follow).

    * shots 001-007 show Diigolet hindering use of Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) basic to Exchange Server 2003

    * shot 008 highlights the security alert; 009 shows the alert-free security icon that appears when Chrome is run without the extension

    * shot 010 shows Diigolet hindering use of the Diigo site (v3 beta).

    Security

The security alerts are proper. However: some users may misunderstand their origin. Bear in mind, classroom or enterprise environments in which an extension may be pre-installed, users may be unaware of (or disinterested in) the Diigo way of things. Signing out from Diigo does not prevent these alerts.

    Modal dialogues

It's good that Diigo alerts the user when pages are not supported. However: a modal dialogue is not the best form of alert; it prevents loading of the page until the user acknowledges the information. On Mac OS X I might expect such alerts to be presented via Growl.

    Obscuring page content

    The main problem: obscurity.

We should aim to never obscure any page content.

http://digg.com/u14ThE shows a toolbar that does not obscure things, but this comparison may be inappropriate. Digg and Diigo are very different creatures.

    Other thoughts

FWIW I like the idea of a sidebar approach to Diigolet.††
Can such things be done with HTML 5? I wonder.

Sorry, that URL doesn't have the desired effect.
    http://digg.com/http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum should work.

    > ten screen shots

    Three more key points:

In http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/Documents/diigo-public/299/004.png the toolbar is hidden, but a Diigo icon continues to interfere with the New message button of OWA. Aiming for a new message too easily reaches something other than the New message button, the toolbar drops down, a zig-zag is required to hide the toolbar for the umpteenth time then return to the New message button.

http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/Documents/diigo-public/299/005.png shows the toolbar reappearing too easily when I aim for something other than the OWA area; whilst the toolbar is hidden, the remaining Diigo icon mid-screen is an obstacle that must be carefully steered around.

http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/Documents/diigo-public/299/006.png is most interesting. If load of Diigolet is incomplete for some reason, then the Loading Diigolet banner is so obstructive that the user must either close, or navigate away to another page.

Outlook Web Access Basic is clearly too stiff a test, and in those screen shots I ignore the forewarning that Diigolet is not applicable! Still, it's useful for me to see (for the first time) the reasons for lack of support.

Experimenting with the Diigolet-oriented script for Greasemonkey installed to GreaseKit.

A long list of exclusions may apply.

Exclusions can not prevent Diigolet 4.0b14 from appearing within the preview frame of Diigo Meta. Whether this will be a problem, I'm not sure.

How to moderate when it's possible that a person's first post is a simple mistake? - 19 views

group moderate new member topic bookmark post help gpd4

Sometimes a person posts to a group by accident. I have done so on a few occasions.

A question, to Diigo: what's the best approach when you wish to decline the posts without banning the member?

    Observation

If I follow the link to the poster's profile then click
    Send Message
    then Diigo may respond
Sorry, you are not allowed to send message to this user.

    Suggestions

    1. A join of a group by person P
should be interpreted as an allowance for the owners and moderators of that group to send messages to person P.

In other words, if person P prefers to not receive messages, that preference may be over-ridden in a group joining situation.

    2. To the three current options,
Approve | Ban from this group | Ban from this group and flag as spammer
    add a fourth:
        | Decline

    Opting to decline should either
send a standard form of wording, or
allow the owner/moderator to enter custom wording.

    "three strikes and you're out".

(For the moment I'm ignoring the rest of that topic. I don't remember posting it!)

Bump (I don't like to ban users, I'd prefer to decline messages).

    > I don't like to ban users, I'd prefer to decline messages

Previous workaround (refresh the page, to gain a less obtrusive advertisement) is not working for me today.

The much more fiddly (less intuitive) workaround is to alt-tab (in Safari in Mac OS X) until you reach the hidden link to flag as spammer.

Mash: bringing Common Tag format to Diigo: Faviki bookmarklet before all else - 9 views

mash suggestion Common Tag Diigolet Faviki Google Zemanta gpd4
  • Graham Perrin

    Problems

I don't get suggested tags, and I'm mildly bothered by the lack of consistency in communities' approaches to tagging.

    Solution: mash

My workflow — with naturally accelerated bookmarklets in Safari in Mac OS X

     1. command-1 for Faviki bookmarklet

     2. immediately type unread

     3. key Enter or Return

     4. click Save

     5. command-M to minimise the window

     6. in other windows, continue browsing
        — and bookmarking with Faviki bookmarklet and/or Diigolet

     7. when I'm ready, un-dock the window

     8. choose from tags suggested by Faviki
        — powered by Zemanta and Google

     9. enter any additional tags
        — auto-complete list
        — tag search
        — benefit from Common Tag format and Wikipedia definitions.

    10. click Save

    11. click Faviki

    12. copy tags

    13. command-{ to browse back to the bookmarked page

    14. command-2 for Diigolet

    15. paste tags

    16. to multiple-word tags, add Diigo-required enclosures
        — currently speech marks, " "

At first glance: the mash (sixteen steps) is long, but many of the steps are optional.

When I minimise to Dock, it allows me to focus on other things; and the time in Dock allows suggestions to arrive.

    An abbreviated workflow

     1. command-1 for Faviki bookmarklet

     2. choose from suggested tags

     3. click Save

     4. click Faviki

     5. copy tags

     6. command-{ to browse back to the bookmarked page

     7. command-2 for Diigolet

     8. paste tags

    9. to multiple-word tags, add Diigo-required enclosures
        — currently speech marks, " "

    In both workflows

Gaining suggestions and — most importantly, Common Tag format — is easier than tagging in Diigo.

The only aggravation is the Diigo approach to multiple word tags: requiring addition of two speech marks per tag. I understand the origins of this requirement, but I'd like to see a future Diigo that's more harmonious with other services (that wish is spread across various topics).

    Summary

Mashes such as this help to bring Common Tag to Diigo.

At http://www.faviki.com/pages/welcome/ the 81-second Flash video 'Tagging with Faviki' is recommended viewing.

    Screen shots at http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/Documents/diigo-public/mash/faviki/01 show
Faviki bookmarklet + bookmark dialogue of Diigolet working alongside each other.

In the seventh shot, I have finished adding the enclosures that are required for Diigo to recognise multiple word tags.

Good news for anyone who mashes Faviki with Diigo: Faviki support for OpenID is improved (the signed in state is more persistent).

Re: Common Tag, Kevin Marks advises sticking with rel-tag. Until I get this in context, I'm continuing to use Common Tag wherever possible in Diigo. Assuming that it will help, semantically, long term.

I have seen this problem, or something like it, during Firefox updates to Diigo in the past. Again today. Suspect that I see it more often with updates to Diigo than with updates to other add-ons.
