Is there a way to turn off the highlighting and public notes of others on pages where I am not interested in what other Diigo users have to say?

    Yes, via the browser toolbar:

    - go to the Highlight button
    - click the drop-down arrow next to it
    - mouse down to See Private and Group Annotations
    - another menu will open up
    - click on See only Private Annotations

Even if you do not mark your bookmarks as "private", this should display only the highlights that you've made yourself.

Thanks GL for sharing the tip!

Indeed, you can use these view annotation filters. In the upcoming release (new V4 site & toolbar), we will be rolling out even more anti-spam measures to allow more specific sites blockage and spam reporting. Stay tuned and thanks for your patience & our community members' active help & involvement!

If your copy of the bookmark is private, and if all page comments and notes on your copy are private, and if the group is private, then:

    a) when you address an annotation to the group, it respects the privacy of the group

    b) if you copy (share) your bookmark to the group, it respects the privacy of the group

    - but see the recent topic: re: disclosure of topic titles at profile pages.

If your copy of the bookmark is private, and if the group is private, and if all page comments and notes on your copy are private, then all is good.

If you subsequently add any public annotation, then

    a) your copy of the bookmark may retain its mark of privacy

    but

    b) logically, it becomes possible for people to associate your name with that bookmark

    and

    c) your other highlights may be visible to the public

    - private notes and private group notes stuck to those highlights remain invisible to the public.
