The world is going to end in 2012. Again. This time, it's going to do so because 2012 is the time of an expected peak of solar activity, and never mind that such peaks have been coming on the average of about once every 11 years for ages without the apocalypse coming, so far.

This time, it's going to be different.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology a Boston.

luoghi simili e sapere subito dove ci troviamo.

A lack of evidence (October 2006) - Review - PhysicsWeb - 0 views

The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief

    Francis S Collins

    2006 Simon & Schuster 304pp $26.00hb

Most scientists do not believe in God for two simple reasons: they see no evidence for him; and they find no need to include supernatural elements in the models they build to describe their observations. Still, they are largely content to assign science and religion to separate domains, which Stephen Jay Gould calls "non-overlapping magisteria". This allows non-believing scientists to dodge the topic of religion altogether, thus avoiding jeopardizing what is most precious to them – their funding. It also permits scientists who do believe in God to compartmentalize their thinking and never discuss science and religion in the same breath.

However, this is not possible if you are Francis Collins – an evangelical Christian and head of the Human Genome Project. The Language of God is Collins's personal attempt to explain how he reconciles his science and his faith. Early on, he affirms what has become the disingenuous position of many scientists in the US and of organizations such as the National Academy of Sciences – that science has nothing to say about God and the supernatural. This flies in the face of the facts. Many reputable scientists are doing research that could, in principle, demonstrate the existence of the supernatural.

In the October issue of Physics World, atheist and regular aristarch of religion Victor J Stenger presents his reasons why The Language of God does not live up to its promise of providing "evidence for belief".

    About the author

Victor J Stenger is emeritus professor of physics at the University of Hawaii and adjunct professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado, e-mail vstenger@mindspring.com. His new book, God, The Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows that God Does Not Exist will be published by Prometheus Books in 2007.

The authors of this paper are proposing a way to make science, in the Healthcare area, more 'democratic' arguing naively that if somethign is democratic then it is better. They have learned nothing form science. They also come out with that old and already demystified pomo that science or as they call it in this paper: "evidence based movement" is male, white and heterosexual. They are simply wrong or wanting to crate confusion implying with this that science is exclusionist. Yes, science is exclusionist, but with the outcomes of the scientific inquiry not with people and this is for taking the best knowledge, the better supported by the data, not for the will to take certain 'knowledge' as true. All of this drives the authors to label science with the adjetive 'facism'. They also make a comparison with the technical language used in the healtcare area with the language 'Newspeak' invented by George Orwell in his novel "1984", and attribute to the former the narrowing of ideas and thus the impossibility of connceptualization beyond a given paradigm that the latest has in the mentioned novel. This is also naive, since the technical language of a given science enriches the field allowing scientist to label new concepts with especial words that are not available in the common language, also all the pomo philosophers cited in this paper use their own 'technical language'. In conclusion this paper lacks of any serious critical inquiry, scientific standards even rigourus logical standards and appears to be driven by an agenda, an agenda that its main goal is to allow uncritical, pseudoscientific and antiscientific practices to takeover the scientific arena. A goal that is dangerous because if reached there will be no manner to distinguish between useful knowledge and gibberish.
