Google might top SL due to the following reasons:
1. Integration into GoogleEarth
2. Offering free software to build Objects and Scripts, starting with GoogleSketch
3. Better integration of economics (GoogleCheck, Adsense,..)
4. Offering more space for individual users (each user account a lowcost island)
5. Integration with OpenSocial Api, GoogleVideo, YouTube, Gmail, ...
6. Google has more capital (it could even easily buy (chunks of) SecondLife)
7. Google owns all the earlier newsgroups, i.e. has a broader community userbase

Hm yes but so far lively.com is windows-only, whereas SL is multiplatform. So maybe that'll change and maybe not: Google Talk is still windows-only.
Then the code for SL is open (not that I would know what to do with it, but it's important) whereas codes for Google things never are open.
I mean lively.com does sound interesting for all the reasons you list, but so far I am as wary of it as I am of SL - quite a bit.

I think an alternative to SL that is geared for adults (Ok, professionals who are adults) in training and education is needed . I'll give GL a try... the integration with other products is important .... Claude has some excellent points/reservations as well though.
No doubt GL is in the beta stage and like most of their apps will be user driven... let's hope more post-teens use it than SL!

Google already offers code-hosting for OpenSource developers (similar to SourceForge), so I guess, it won't take long until Google expands their service to a more universal audience.

You mean, the code for the Client-software.
As soon as the code for the gridsoftware is open, then you can be sure, that Google knows to let it exploit by their (unpaid) OpenSource developer community.
Concerning the already built objects and scripts, you only need to convert them uniformly into the
preferred language of the Google constructs.

Perhaps making both worlds interoperable will be the first step ...

Yes, I think a professional alternative for people with RealNames and PhotorealisticAvatars would be
another good argument for the new service to succeed.

Google Lively seems a lot less intimidating to get started in than SL. We created a room in minutes and can bring in people for a discussion in little time as well. While, currently, SL is a more powerful tool for learning and visiting simulations, Lively has potential to become a great tool for synchronous chat.
