WASHINGTON (AP) — An Energy Department report concludes that wind turbines can produce a fifth of the nation's annual electricity needs within about two decades. That is about the same share of electricity produced today by nuclear power. Wind energy today accounts for only about 1 percent of the nation's electricity. The government report to be released Monday said by 2030 wind energy could account for 300,000 megawatts of power, or about 20 percent of the total electricity generated.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander came to Oak Ridge on Friday to promote a five-year project aimed at making America energy independent and more environmentally friendly within a generation. Alexander, a Tennessee Republican, is comparing his proposal to the World War II-era Manhattan Project, when the nation worked feverishly and secretly to develop atomic weapons. Oak Ridge's people and facilities played a key role in that project.

OGDENSBURG — Alliance Energy is proposing to generate up to 110 megawatts of electricity using underwater currents from the St. Lawrence River. The company proposes to place up to 11 arrays, with each array using 10 underwater turbines, in the river. Each turbine can generate up to one megawatt of electricity.
