The "resource curse" literature is very influential in neoclassical economics, democratization literature, and World Bank approaches. However, do the qualities of petroleum as a commodity cause authoritarian and patriarchal organizations, or do the true causes arise from deeper structures of petro-capitalism? I support the latter argument, but clearly this is still an important debate that needs to be filled out.
