How can you engage your students and be sure they are learning the conceptual foundations of a lecture course? In From Questions to Concepts, Harvard University Professor Eric Mazur introduces Peer Instruction and Just-in-Time teaching -- two innovative techniques for lectures that use in-class discussion and immediate feedback to improve student learning. Using these techniques in his innovative undergraduate physics course, Mazur demonstrates how lectures and active learning can be successfully combined. Wastepoered Toilet Mobile - An innovative hybrid project is turning heads across Japan, as the TOTO Bike Neo, known more causally as the poop-mobile, makes a high-profile pitch for environmental responsibility. The three-wheeled bike is powered by biogas fuel made up of fertilized, purified livestock waste and gray-water, according to the International Business Times. Despite the eye-catching -- and decorative -- oversized-toilet seat, the bike does not actually run on excrement provided by the driver. "

The National Science Foundation, for example, is embracing the formula to try to increase commercialization of the university research it finances. Last fall, the foundation announced the first of a series of grants for what it calls the N.S.F. Innovation Corps. The 21 three-member teams received a crash course at Stanford in lean start-up techniques, and have been given $50,000 each and six months to test whether their inventions are marketable.
