"One of the many ways to get yourself into the sky is to build your own aircraft. This might sounds insane at first: when someone says "I'm going to build my own airplane," it might sound a lot like saying "I'm going to build my own nuclear submarine." But the truth is, homebuilts can be as simple or as complicated as the builder wants, and people of all different backgrounds have built their own airplanes."

John Burroughs High School in Burbank, Calif. David Vezina had given up a job piloting Learjets to teach kids about aviation. In addition to providing real airplanes to high schools and other interested groups, Build A Plane is working with the National Educational Association, the Wathen Foundation, the FAA, NASA and several key aviation and aerospace organizations to create an aviation-based curricula that teaches science, technology, engineering and math. And for groups that don't have the room or the faculty to construct real aircraft, Build A Plane will soon release a software package and lesson guide that will allow kids to build airplanes virtually.

Conversations with adults and kids around the country have reiterated that the basics of the Build A Plane idea are viable and remain the same: * There is an overwhelming number of teenage kids in America who would be excited to join a Build A Plane project. * There is an overwhelming number of adults who are willing and capable of mentoring Build A Plane programs. * There is a huge supply of aircraft that are no longer flown or are not airworthy and would make great project planes. * There are hundreds of kit aircraft that are purchased, but never completed. * Owners who donate aircraft not only give a wonderful gift, but also may qualify for tax benefits from Uncle Sam.

Build the Station Simulation: Educator Guide -- Grades K-8 Just as five space agencies cooperated to build the International Space Station, students can work together to build a paper model of the world's largest orbiting laboratory. Teams take on the roles of international partners as they learn about and assemble portions of the model. During a mock summit, each team briefs the group about their section of the model. The teams then assemble the entire model to complete the space station. The guide includes student sheets, parts of the model, instructions for holding a summit, and facts about the station.

Begich Middle School In Anchorage, AK) is building two different airplanes, one a Pietenpole and the other some kind of ultralight. They have even made up their own Build A Plane t-shirts with a list of local sponsors who are making the project happen. Their teacher who was the spine of the project left and the school has been looking for someone that knows what they're doing to take over. Guess who's taking the job? From nearby Elmendorf Air Force Base (Anchorage), the United States Air Force is sending the 3rd Equipment Maintenance Squadron to partner with the kids to finish the airplane.

A group of 12 teenagers from all across the Portland/Vancouver area have teamed up to build an airplane. It's a one of a kind program developed by local aviation enthusiasts who are now passing on what they know to a new generation. Vancouver's Mountain View High School. For six hours every Saturday, 12 local teens get to build an airplane with the help of dedicated mentors who are all volunteering their time to help in the effort. Scott McDaniels helped create the teen flight program.

"you do not need a pristine laboratory to build a composite airplane. Like most aircraft building projects, if you have a 2-car garage you have what is needed. It has been my experience that having your workshop in or near your home solves two problems. First of all, you will be much more likely to spend time on the project after getting home from work versus having to drive 30 minutes to another location.
